the rest, being also lost becomes a souce of still proportionably greater
pain (a). Moreover the quantity of respect and goodwill they lost is
the greater inasmuch as there is nothing in the
circumstances of the case to move compassion , which
in case of an unmerited loss by calamities out of a
man's power to prevent, goes a good way towards
stemming the current of contempt and keeping up
the stock of his reputation to its former level from being overborn by it.
Fresh pains pouring in upon a man in this manner
from all quarters at every instant, keep
his mind in a perpetual and state of encreasing
irritation. [+] [+] But the same sum of money which before would have held out to him only an uncertain accession of pleasure now holds out to him a certain relief from pain: and But pain is even at any other time always a <add>a time a much</add> more powerful
stimulant than pleasure. The same sum
therefore which the other day if a hundred times multiplied,
would not before have shaken his integrity, will
now act upon him with a force too
strong to be resisted.
