16) Personal Injuries Simple.

Motive bad in itself. Illustration. a community being but the aggregate of a number of
persons, any act by which you suffer is pro tanto
pernicious to the community: your pain is pro tanto
the pain of the community. Now the suffering of
the community in any respect is an event which is in itself
evil: and which therefore by a common figure in
speech is made to give the name of bad or evil
to that cause of action which we have called the
interior present motive.

Motive bad by subserving a bad intent. Illustration: Again I give you a blow: I do it because I am
hired to do it. by one who is angry with you. Here my motive is not the pain
you will suffer by receiving the blow, but the money
i e: the enjoyments I may reap by means
of the money which the angry person gives me
to in consideration of my giving you the blow. Here
then the event (viz: that of the money's being given to
me) which is the immediate cause of the pleasure that
operates with me as a motive the event I mean
of the money's being given to me is not in itself a
mischievous pernicious one: the pleasure that I derive from the
receipt of the money, far from being a pernicious
event, is when consider'd by itself of a nature beneficial
to the community: since it is a pleasure
enjoy'd by one of the persons who are + + [said to be members of that fictitious body. Why then is it that members of it. that body. [The reason why
this pleasure when consider'd as a motive is termed
