21) Personal Injuries Simple.

Motive Social or benevolent. case the motive is stiled a good one meaning the
present interior motive is stiled a good one has
been spoken of as issuing from the principle of
benevolence. A motive that issues from this source
may be stiled a social or benevolent motive.

Motive and intent often of an opposite in their quality. So distinct even in ordinary [apprehensions] conceptions
are the [intention and the motive] quality
of the action and the quality of the motive that gave
birth to it, that nothing is more common than to
speak of them as opposite. Not A bad action is often said
to proceed from a good motive: a good action
from a bad motive. Now such as is the action
such is the intent: the intent therefore as the action
and the motive may be of opposite qualities: so
may also the intention and the motive. The intention
may be bad when the motive is good: the intention
good when the motive that gave birth to it is
bad.
