Mischiefs. It is now pretty generally acknowledged in this country at least that the
Magistrate Sovereign is the proper guardian of the
temporal happiness of this life only, and
by no means of that of the life to come.
So great is the danger deemed to be of his
not forming the right judgment of the
means to compass the latter happiness, and
though not, so extreme although that judgment should
be right, is found to be the difficulty of getting
the subject to acquiesce in it. to mention no other grounds [reasons] This is what persuasion,
however, whatever be the grounds of
it, This is what one of the most an eminent father of our own
church has not scrupled made no scruple to avow, and that in the
