16) Pers.l Inj:s Disabl:t temp:y

Reputation. A case supposed, where the attack is verbal. and begins telling such a story (true or false) of the man, as if believed
would probably put a stop to the match.
The adversa defamer is a person where from report has some connected recommended
with to the woman by such a way connection, as would in all probability gain dispose
credit with her. her to give credit to his word. A Father, Guardian or near Relation.
The overhears report of which the
party defamed has already an intimation, of whether
true or not as to the main substance of it, has such
a mixture of truth as would give it probability, till
sifted to the bottom. He overhears it, just as it
is begun, and before a stranger could tell the drift
of it. He rushes in seizes the defamer, carries
him off by main force, and takes the requisite
measures to prevent the defamer's having any further
access to the woman, before the ship sets marriage
is concluded. To account for his behaviour he pretends
some other cause of quarrel.

If he had not done as he did, the injury he
would suffer'd in his reputation would have been irreparable.
He must either have gone his voyage
and lost, perhaps, we will say suppose for ever the object of his affections,
or staid at home against orders to justify
himself, and lost his post, his honour perhaps
his life. Much less evil it is manifest would
ensue to the defamer from such an attack or
a much more mischievous attack upon his person,
than would have ensued to the party defamed if he had permitted
the attack upon his reputation to have its effect without taking this
method to of defending himself against it.
