Where a ground of exemption was imagined to subsist but falsely. it is manifest that this disposition from which any
who should be possessed of property which it should
lie in his way to lay his hands on would always
have to fear: and it is manifest that the
disposition is not at all varied by any the accidental
circumstance that happen'd without his knowledge
to make the thing his own. In virtue of such disposition At a future time if
Next let it appear that he happens to see a means of laying his hands on
a thing that he thinks convenient for him, he
will then as now lay his hands on it although it be not
his own: and at such future time this accidental
circumstance which makes the thing his own will
not subsist.

that D. does Next let it appear 2dly that D. does believe the
thing in question to be his own property: although
from circumstances of which he is not apprized it
happens to be not his property. Imagining it to
be his property he defends himself in the possession
of it; which if he had not imagined it to be his
property he would not have done. Now From his
defending what he imagines to be his property there
does not appear any reason to infer a disposition
in him to maintain himself in the possession of
that which any thing but what he does imagine
to be his property. It is not often that what he
does really imagine to be his property will turn out to be
the property of any body else: so seldom, that it
is not probable any apprehensions should ever
be entertained in that that are worth taking into
