4) Personal Injuries. Aggravating circumstances.

Circumstances it depends on to be modifications of the part which is the percipient
instrument of the organical sensation, and of the exterior
body which is made use of as an afficient instrument.

The only way of characterizing them I can think of
in which they can be characterized is by this effect viz: their [being productive of the
Pain of Ignominy in the sufferer.] subjecting the being apt to subject
sufferer to the Pain of Ignominy. Which What circumstances
are of a nature to have this effect in
any individual case is a matter that is likely when the case
is proposed to be pretty readily apprehended and pretty
generally agreed on.

The chief of them however seem to [be descr comprized
in some description of the] consist in some modification
of the part of the sufferer's person which is the percipient
instrument of the organical sensation, and
of the exterior body which is made use of as an
afficient instrument. A stroke with a small switch slap on the face, a pull
by the nose, or a kick on that part which with
a view to it's particular irritability on these occasions
has been ludicrously stiled the seat of honour may
serve for instances.

Ignominy, why the effect of certain personal injuries By The Pain of Ignominy I mean the Pain which a
man feels upon observing him to be, or apprehending
himself to be the object of the contempt, and thence
to a certain degree of the ill will of others. He thence learns to feel himself exposed to in a certain degree to their ill offices, and deprived of the benefit of their good offices. On what
account it is that one man is disposed to feel entertain
a contempt from for another from seeing having seen known him
