COINING AESTIMATION of Quant. of 'Punishment.

The high Station which the offences of Coining upon the law occupy
in the Scale of Crimes, is owing not to the
Nature of a single Act, but to the presumption
which every single act affords of a that is
of the existence present & future of an indefinite number of other acts of the like
kin, past & future

And if the keeping up of the Punishment as considered as attributed to a single act to
a degree pitch any way, approaching to [that of] this
present be, (as it should seem to be) any ways
justifiable, it is on the principle of compensating
certainty by intensity. Idem therefore precipitate

morrow And the propensity of the people from the Act to infer the Habit
& from thence to take a magnified Idea of the
Crime magnified beyond what that of a single committal
of it would import, diminishes in the present
instance the tendency which an encrease
of intensity has to detract from Certainty:
the degree of Punishment actually expedient competent is by
this means not so much raised above stretched beyond that which
they think competent as to indisposess them
against co-operating towards it's execution, at
