Review of Humphreys § Agenda
8
8. To the divisional
denominations in common
use substitute the numerical
ones
Instead In place of the words in common use - just as Book
Chapter, Section, and the like, — for For the designation of the several successive divisional operations
by which the whole entire work is cut into the sevral
correspondent number of parts employ numerical words
which following one another in the order of the numeration table indicate respectively the
number of lines the numerical
operation has been performed: to wit numeration table: for example Section, Bissection, Trissection
and so on. These words which they this respectively designate indicate
the relation of the operation to the which was the subject
matter of it, give denomination also to the masses of discourse
which have respectively been their results.
9
9. For the result of the
last divisional operation
employ the word Article
as being in common use
for this purpose
For the result of the last individual operation
employ the word Article; this being the denomination which
for this purpose is in most common use.
10
10. But where lists require
to be given on it
give them each item a numerical
denomination, and
refer to them by the denomination
of Sub-Articles.
If in the tenor context of the Article enumeration comes requires
to be formed of and a number of subject matters to which
one and the same work serves as a for the sake of clearness of exhibition predicate, for distinctness
it will commonly be of use to des employ in disting
making them as distinct so many different numbers in
the order of the numeration table. In this case the
several portions of discourse may be considered and spoken
of as constituting so many Sub-Articles
11
11. Indicate by a numerical
figure the
number of divisional
operations by which
the result in question
has been produced:
the figure in a broad
type, each struck
through by a thin §.
for section.
For presenting to the eye in the casual mode to the eye
the several results of these several divisional operations employ
another a numerical figure expt designation of the number
of times the operation has been of which the mass of matter
designated and denominated has been the result. rendering
by Make for this purpose in each the instance of each the type more than usually broad
and black: and and into each such figure insert a fine and narrow
§. such as either singly or in conjunction with another nearly parallel
to it, is in ordinary printing by two such letters nearly
in a state of parallelering as thus 8.
