Review of Humphreys

Ch. Agenda
? (3) §. Depending Suits

A cleaver would not serve for a deflecting knife
It was not made for the purpose

So in regard to species of suits. By any one of
a number of causes of complication, a degree a proportionate correspondent
degree of complexity, thence of delay and expence, is capable of
being given to a suit. In the Long ago with little or no
exception they have been out, and in that same work
laid open to view: by any one of that considerable number:
how much greater proportion by any large part up to the whole?

From the example judge of the risk. In every account between
commercial man and or between commercial man
and commercial man, at the death of or insolvency of
a commercial man between the deceased and the insolvent and
all the several commercial men he has had dealings with, so
many items so many possible subject matters of litigation,
in relation to each of them, had it stood alone, a distant suit would
in case of dispute and litigation have been necessary. Add Apply to each item the distance in respect
of evidence, and matter of compensation necessary as above

appropriately/relatively reflecting To no lawyer can this state of things be a secret; in
it he beholds the his sinister interest beholds its strong hold.
1. The existing system is it to be defended;, in an artificially lengthened period he brings together in a
f confused heap a multitude of these moveable causes of delay and
expence and then triumphantly exclaims asks — you who complain in your ignorance
of the infinite lengthiness and of expence to the established
system of procedure can give speak take upon you to speak
of this inconvenience as avoidable? do you not see already

truly lamentable as this all is body of inconvenience is,
see you not how utterly unavoidable is? is it in the power
of human wisdom to exclude or shew the door against it Then why make it
matter of imputation and complaint against a system of procedure
established created and preserved by the accumulated wisdom of age.
