§§. Defenders of things as they are — course taken by them.
These causes every man who has or looks to
have any share in the project and who beholds in any
system having for its end the ends of justice a diminution
of that project to an unfathomable and thence appalling
amount will of course instead of holding up to view
employ the whole force of his ingenuity in the endeavour
to keep out of sight it is curious enough to observe
the different courses pursued by different advocates
of the system as it is for their arrival attainment of the
same end so flagrant and universally felt as well as
seen is the evil that to deny its existence altogether
would be a hopeless operation and too dangerous to
reputation to be ventured upon. Candour in conjunction
with public spirit is therefore to be assumed and
this or that little portion of the evil pointed out and
indication made of a declared appropriate remedy.
But when a little sacrifice of this sort is made as a
peace offering to propitiate public opinion the main
body of the system of abuse is to be defended at any
rate that which it would be in vain to deny is the
magnitude of the evil taken in its fatality this being the
indispensable effect now then comes the question as to the
cause the whole field of enquiry is of course ransacked
for the discovery of every imaginable cause which
can present the least chance of acceptance always with
the exception of the only true one the most eligible
cause is the perversity of the nature of things: the
cause so long as the saddle is confined to the back of
poor damn nature no human sitting part is galled
by it this
