1829. Jany.
Petition for Justice
Conclusion

1.
Such the outline of a
system on greatest
happiness principle. Whatever
parts may appear
objectionable, no objection
applicable to the
whole.

2.
Succedaneum proposed
in lieu of existing
system.

3.
Inaptitude of existing
system and aptitude
of the new.

4.
Need of extinguishing
blind admiration for
existing system.

5.
Objection answered
that the present attack
weakens the force and
efficiency of existing
laws.

6.
Application of the
punishment and expectation
of this application
depends not
on public opinion.

7.
Greatest happiness
requires even that
the force of existing
laws should be weakened.

8.
Before the sore can
be healed, it must be
probed.

9.
Damage to estimation
continually done.
Prevalence of self
regard on this as on
all other occasions.

10.
Pain inflicted on
feelings of individuals
no reason against exertions
for putting an
end to the abuses of
the system.

11.
Classes affected by proposed
reforms, two.
1. the Professional
2. the official.

12.
As to professional
class, the length of time
to intervene before
the reform, would
cause the contemplated
diminution of
their profits: would
take away the mischief
of the change.

13.
Existing race of professional
men have
for their apology the
situation in which
they are placed and
the example of their
predecessors.

14.
The more the interest
of professional
men is opposed to the
reform, the greater
the glory to those who
surmount this obstacle,
and contribute to
the cure of the evil.

15.
Petitioner's eyes
fully open to the
enormity of the disorder.

16.
Patience, hitherto
exemplified, has
been the fruit of
ignorance.
