In the case of a suit at Common Law
the name of the species of suit may be expected
to be found in the Books of the several Clerks
belonging to the several Courts: as for example
Debt, Case, Trespass Ejectment and so
forth. If so, these might be examined by Order
from the Committee of the H. of Com's. sent to
the several Courts.

Not so in the case of a suit in Equity.
As to suits of this description, no otherwise
shown through the medium of the Solicitors
would any conception of the nature of the
suit be obtainable: and, even through this
medium, the obtainment of such conception
might in some instances be attended with
some difficulty. The Prayer part of the Bill
is a document which the Solicitor might
and should be ordered to bring with him. Seldom
would it amount to more than one or at
most two octavo pages.

True it is that in some sort the Bill
filed by the Plaintiff would speak for itself.
But for explanations in relation to it, answers
by the Plaintiff's Solicitor to questions put
to him by the Committee would be frequently
necessary. Nor, as to the place of residence,
of any of the several parties would this same
Bill afford any adequate information.

In the case of every suit still in pendency
two data it will be in the power of
the proper Officer to furnish: namely date
of the first proceeding in the suit and the
date the latest: and in the case of every
suit
