(a) On this occasion are here mentioned, only
that it may be seen they have not been overlooked
the several make shift modes of mental communications
that have been known to be employed:
these are — 1. those employed where, on the part of
the individual addressed, the senses of sight and hearing,
one or both, have been wanting: 2. those employed
in languages such as the ancient Egyptians and
the Chinese, in which the written made of discourse
fails of being in so perfect a degree correspondent to
the oral made, as the languages of Europe.
