S.2 Elucidation
-than that which has thus been described. Judge
A (suppose) has been removed: Judge A in whose
presence the testimony has in the oral mode been
elicited: and with it the natural signs with which
the utterance of it was accompanied, of which natural
signs an account has been written down by,
or under the care of the Registrar: and here, supposing
the importance of the case sufficient to pay
for the trouble, confirmation and, in
writing might be elicited from the surrounding
audience.
The place of it is now taken by Judge
B. In what way his situation is that of disadvantage,
as compared with that of the Judge A, has been
above stated. But how great soever the disadvantage
may be in the case of this second Judge, it will
not be greater in the case of a third Judge: nor, in
a word, in the case of the last of any number of
successive Judges -
