1829. April
Petition
Supplement.
S.2 Elucidation.

For the purpose of applying such remedy
as the nature of the case admitts of, the thing to be
brought to view in the first place is — of the mass of
instruction capable of being afforded by personal evidence,
that part, which, by removal of the elicitative process
from Judge to Judge, can not but be irrecoverably extinguished:
this being unavoidably given up, then comes
the bringing to view that operations, by means of which,
whatsoever remains capable of being preserved, shall
be preserved.

Necessary to this purpose is reference
to the signs by which the communication is made
between mind and mind conventional evanescent
words spoken: conventional permanent, words written:
natural, intonation, countenance, gesture and deportment:
all these evanescent, countenance and gesture
excepted, in so far as it may have happened
to them to have received permanence from this or
that branch of the imitative art. (a.)

Now then, what is the mass of instruction
incapable of being preserved? It is the difference,
between that afforded by the evanescent conventional
sign, on the one part, and on the other part
that afforded by the correspondent permanent signs,
with the addition of such description as can be given
of natural signs, by means of, those same permanent
conventional signs.

In the description thus explicitly given
of the imperfection, that of the remedy, the only remedy
which it admits of is implicitly contained. On
each occasion, cause to be written down the description
of these natural signs, such of them to which, on
that same occasion, it has happened to exhibit themselves.
