§. 2 Elucidation

The hass of instruction irrecoverably extinguished by
the removal in question is the difference
between what would be afforded between by orally
checked verbal evidence with the non-verbal signs with
which the utterance of it happen on each individual
occasion to be accompanied, and the verbal and
written description of those same signs.

When in the shape of testimony evidence is
checked in the originally sufficiency site original
checked in that mode which originally was was the site,
and will ever remain the most commonly exemplified
mode, namely the oral mode, it presents itself by
certain audible signs of observance, called words: those signs
may be termed being the result of agreement
as below individuals who are in the habit of personal
intercourse, and admitt of endless diversification correspondent
to the groupes into which the individuals belonging
to the species have chanced to be aggregated.

(a) On this occasion are here mentioned, only that it may
be sure they have not been overlooked, the several makeshift
that have modes of mental communication for between moral and thought that have
been known to be employed: that is to say these are – 1. those employed
when in the several cases in which where on the part of the individual
addressed, the senses of sight and hearing, one or both
have been wanting: exact 2. those which are exhibited employed in
those languages such as the Egyptian in antient times with Chinese in whi the instance of
unusual Egyptians and the Chinese in which the sp written mode of discourse fails of being
in so perfect degree correspondent to the oral mode, as in
the languages of Europe.
