the facts of the case as
long as possible

Under the regular system, the whole force of the
artist's mind has been applied to the keeping back the
facts of the case back as long as possible: mixing at the
same time, in the largest proportion possible, false conception
with true; with instructive. For this purpose, a
primordial and indispensable arrangement has been the
keeping out of the whole business from first to last as compleatly
as possible the party whose business it is, and
putting in his stead the hireling whose interest is directly
