and solemnly it has been utter'd. For in the judgment
of this tribunal there is only this distinction: falsehood [utter'd] in order to hurt another,
is villainy: falsehood [utter'd] in order to save
one's self is meanness. Urged by the spear of a
nearer and more galling punishment the subject
breaks through the salutary restraints of the imposed
on him by the moral sanction. These restraints
lose ta their hold upon him: they lose their
influence over him. But multitudes, perhaps the
majority, are in this same case: they lose
their influence on the community at large.
Some indeed in the judgments they pronounce on
the conduct of the persons thus constrained, recognize
the tyranny iniquity of the legislator, and make an allowance
for the temptation. But the judgments of
others are not alike accommodating. They cannot enter into
the requisite distinctions.
Falsehood is with
them one uniform indivisible
thing, which
must be either condemned
or allow'd of in the business
They must either condemn
it here when itn it's immediate
application consequences it is
innocent immaterial or condemn excuse
it elsewhere where it is mischievous pernicious.
A sort of
schism then is formed in the judgments of this miscellaneous but
still respectable tribunal. Some exempt this falsehood
from the censure past on other falsehoods:
others are inexorable: and as many as are, so
many must be added to the number of those whose
suffrages a man in order to be at peace with
himself must have accustomed himself to . + 2 + and till he can do
this he suffers
he must make himself
callous

But as there on the other hand there are
some in whose estimation a falsehood thus circumstanced
is treated with indulgence, others the great barrier being
broken down will
