The effects of
superstition must
be taken into the
account of as well
as those of laudable
religion
The common solution of these difficulties is to place
all the good to the account of religion, and all the
mischief to the account of superstition. But this
distinction is a merely verbal one: the thing itself
is not alter'd by a man's choosing making use of the word superstition

in the other. The cause of the effects in question,
the motive which acts upon the mind is in
both cases one and the same: it is the hope fear
of evil or the hope of good at the hands of a being supposed conceived to be

motive, one man shall attribute it to religion
while another attributes it to superstition.]
