from the abuse of a thing against the use is as much
as to say that in taking an a fair estimate of the general
tendency of any cause, you are to take account
of the good effects only and to leave out the bad.
Salutary Useful instruments by being perverted misapplied will often become
pernicious: Instruments of good
by being misapplied
will often prove become instruments
of evil
true  : but one main ingredient in
the perfection of an instrument is the not being
liable to be misapplied. Drugs which are most
efficacious in the way of medicine are apt to
often convertible into poisons : true : but those which
are dangerous are never so useful upon the whole
as those, if such there are, which being equally serviceable are more
safe. Mercury and opium are useful articles :
poisons as they may be made to be when ill applied: true but bread and water and are more useful still.
Be it all this while remember'd that I am in speaking
of religion in I am all along considering not
what it ought to be nor even what it might be,
but what hitherto, in the mind of man, it has
been. [The object is holy and impeccable: but the
recipient the agent is frail and sinful
