Evil inclinations not
to be removed by
internal applications

In considering the expedients
that apply to the
inclination, we may keep
the distinction between ab
intra & ab extra still
in mind

When the Angel Gabriel prepared the

The causes by which inclination is governed are
motives : and which motives are but so many lots of pleasure and
pain acting in that shape. But the same motive

effects, the best as well as the worst: the phrases
good motives and bad motives if consider'd as
expressive of any thing but the application are ill-
grounded and illusive. If indeed the distinction between
carnal affections and spiritual had its archetype in
truth
had a meaning were real and intelligible
foundation in human nature reality , and by carnal were
meant synonymous mischi pernicious, and by spiritual salutory, the way to keep the
inclination to its right
track
the business of the legislator would be to con
eradicate the one and to confirm the other: but this is
one
