Divesting
I must confess I do [in every thing] love consistency:
and if I served Baal a little, I would
serve him much. I would not appear let drop
a telum imbelle which I know must be sine ictu: if I cast a first stone, it should be
follow'd by a second. I would not appear to
aim at what I must see I was doing nothing
to promote. If in the view of engaging If I took upon me to engage men in
[the practise of holy] pra exercises which at the
same time they were religious were such as by
profession I stood engaged to look upon as meritorious,
and if in that view I interdicted them
from labour and amusement, I would also
interdict them from [idleness and from] drunkenness.
I would do more, I would take care that they
should actually really be engaged in the exercises which
I wished or meant to be understood to wish
they should be engaged in. I would [multiply
the penalties against not coming] shut up all
drinking-houses on a sunday: I would multiply increase
the penalties against staying away from church.
I would exe see them executed: I would lengthen
out the send men churchwardens to go rounds of the parish,
drag men out of their houses, and compel
them to come in. I would lengthen out the service.
