still the loss he suffers, if any, will not upon the
whole be equal to that of the party injured. An
injury of this sort is a virtual invitation to the
injured party to give a challenge: it is therefore a
demonstration of courage: a quality upon the possession
of which, independent of all any other
qualities depends [with few exceptions] a great part of every man's reputation
who makes pretensions to the character
of a gentleman. Whatever a ill qualities then
he may have demonstrated himself to possess, he
has demonstrated shewn himself to possess a considerable
share of this highly estimated high-prized quality of courage.
He has And this share is one which the party
injured has been shewn to want. And Moreover so highly
prized is this quality of courage, that whatever
share he may have lost by the injustice of the
insult abstractedly considerd, he has re acquired to set in ballance against
that loss acquired such a share by that demonstration
given of his courage, as that the clear loss of any
which he has sustained upon the whole, can
scarely equal that which he has thrown upon
his adversary. Let the circumstances of the transaction
have been what they will, it can scarcely
happen but that with reference to the party injured,
the reputation of the wrongdoer will have
acquired a relative encrease. All this, it is easy to see, depends
upon a certain direction bias certain habits of thinking which happens to prevail
among the moral sentiments of those that circle of bystanders upon whom a man's
