Indirect Legislation
Satisfying
II. Expedients for satisfying the desires of the amorousIt is not a place here to decide peremptorily upon so delicate
a subject question as the degree of strictness or facility
which taking all exigences circumstances
into the account,
upon the whole it would be eligible to give to the
marriage tie. This will come in course to be
consider'd under the civil branch of law. At present
we have occasion to consider it only in
a single point of view: and this point of view
the expediency use of the [institutions proposed] expedients above enumerated is evident
enough.
The mischiefs which under the present system
of manners are liable to result from the illicit
commerce of the sexes are the following as follows : 1. Infamy
of on the part of the woman, which leads frequently
certainly constantly to distress and frequently to death. 2.
the destruction of the child either subsequently or
previously to its birth. 3. Propagation of disease.
4. Violation of the marriage covenant.
Let it be allow'd that the multiplication of
marriages upon the common condition of the
indissolubility of the marriage contract is the
of all expedients the most eligible: This then may be looked
upon as the cheapest and
most advantageous rate terms of
all wh any upon which the desire
can be satisfied.
the others
those others which are mentioned afterwords may be
consider'd as more eligible one than another in
the order in which they stand.
