Indirect Legislation
Satisfying
In general upon the continent, neither males
nor females are permitted to dispose of themselves
in marriage [unless by consent of parents or
guardians] till five and twenty. A man if
he would have the object of his choice must wait
[observing all the while for ten years it is taken for granted the
laws of chastity restraints of continence all the while] for ten-years after
those restraint have become irksome. A woman
for 11 or 12 years: in short till she is passed past
her prime. In England the both sexes are subject
to the same restraints till twenty one: notwithstanding
the judgment of the female is ripe so
much sooner, and her person inept for this
state so much sooner than that of the male.
And the restraints are applied indiscriminately
to all for reasons that apply only to the few.
