marriages

In Germany the sort of marriage known
to us by the name of left-handed, nuptiæ ad morganaticam seem to have
been generally established They were instituted
The purpose of the institution was to reconcile
domestic happiness with family pride. The woman
acquired some of the privileges of a wife: but
neither she nor the child issue acquired the
name or rank of the man. The In the Code
Frederiquec the present King of Prussia forbid
them generally throughout his dominions, reserving
to himself however the power of granting particular
