Satisfying
The mischiefs that result from prostitution
consist either in the unhappiness that attends
the state itself, or in the discouragements prejudice,
if any, which it is of to population: the first
affects particular individuals: the second, if it
amounts to any thing affects concerns only the state.
[To
concubinage which it rests then no independent
mischiefs that I can see at least can be assigned:
the mischief that belongs to it consists in the
tendency which it has to give end birth to prostitution.]
That the condition of a prostitute is [generally]
f unhappy is not to be denied: but why? because
the laws have made it so. The unhappiness
attending that condition in what does it consist?
in the infamy itself that is annext to it,
and in the abandonment and want indigence which
are the consequences of that infamy. [But the
infamy is the work of the laws: aggravated by
them at least if not created altogether. [If
this be true], It appears then, that this branch of the mischief then
amounts to nothing. There remains that.] The
infamy of their situation consciousness of that infamy
throws plunges them into melancholy: on the other
hand by cutting them off from tra regular society
from the society of the industrious, and precluding
them from any less precarious means of subsistence employment ,
