A compleat well-digested table of offences
if compleat and formed upon a right principle
that I mean upon the principle of utility and
no other, especially if enriched accompanied by a correspondent
table of the mischiefs producible by each sort of
offence, would be an antidote to many an
error. If we were to Upon examining looking
over such a table we should find I believe, with very few exceptions that
the effect of the encrease and dissemination of
knowledge has been not to encrease add to the number
of those offences or of those mischiefs, nor even to
the facility of perpetrating them, but only to
vary the means of producing that effect. And
how vary them? by substituting, as w I have said
already, such as are less mischievous in the
room of such as are more so.

A new mode of sharping is invented: the

discovery. By and by it gets air; and people
are upon their guard against it. It is therefore
