this is indisputably true very true : but I must own when
I see a whole nation and or a great majority of
it on one side, and its rulers on the other, the I
should think I had a much better chance of
former is the side I should always choose to bet
on.
Far from being efficient causes of insurrection
I look upon associations as one of a very
powerful preservative the most effectual preservatives that could be devised against such mischiefs.
Insurrections are the convulsions of weakness
gaining deriving a momentary strength from despair. They are the
efforts of men who are not suffer'd to speak
their sense or have not force to back who if
their design were known would not have strength force
to back it. Designs which run counter to the
general sense of the people can only succeed by
violence. Those who expect to find the people
sense adverse to their designs will therefore of course prosecute
them by violence if they prosecute them at
all. But if they expect to have it on their side
what should lead them into violence? It would be
exposing themselves to a halter to no purpose. I conclude
that those who are left free to associate
