Indirect
Imagination
Upon the details of each punishment it is not
my business at present to expatiate : a word or two only concerning
the general stile of the decorations, if such they may
be termed, which should might accompany the gloomy
scene.
Let the scaffold be hung with black, the livery
of woe: the attendants all habited in the same
manner colour . Let the countenance face of the executioner [wear] be hid cover'd by a hideous vizor,
at once to strike terror into the bystanders
and to elude their indignation. Aloft above the
head of each malefactor criminal in conspicuous characters
plant the history of his crime: that the people they who
see him suffer who are bear witness to his sufferings may see that he
suffers not without cause: lest the current of pity
transforming itself into indignation should be turned
against the law. Let the characters in personages of this awful
drama move in solemn procession from the
place of confinement to the place of execution:
and let the powers sad and solemn music in grave and
melancholy measures prepare the breasts of the audience
for the lesson they are going to receive.
Let not the Judge think it much it a hardship to preside at
the representation execution of the tragedy to which orders have performed at his command:
given birth: and let the mantle of religion be spread
over the gloom of the whole scene be thickend by the
mantle of religion.
