Voltare's man with
the iron mask

In a little history of England by Lochman
written in the way of question and answer there is
a picture print of King Charles's martyrdom in which the
executioner is represented in a mask. I remember
when a child the print circumstance of the mask
made a wonderful impression on me. Even Voltair
Voltaire's history of the man with the iron mask
affected me I remember in such a manner at the
first reading that for some time after I was almost afraid
to look into it: Even the scene in which Hudibras
gets a drubbing by pretended hobgoblins was by
no means an object of indifference.

Those who have ever bestowd a thought upon education
have but one voice about the importance it is of what of the associations
that are formed in early youth: especially among the common people whose minds are seldom
visited by that sort of reflection which analyses and dissolves these art
primitive combinations.
