When Let the performance of a service of any
kind which originally perhaps was intended to have
been render'd gratis is postponed till after the performance
of another service to be render'd by him for whom the
first service is designed, such first service is thereby turned
into a reward. or thus
Let a service of any kind be intended to be render'd
gratis. [so far thus there is no reward in the case.]
Let it now Instead of its being renderd gratis let the performance of it be now postponed
as to its performance till after the performance of another
service to be render'd by him for whom the first service
is designed: such first service is thereby turned
into a reward. Again let it be given renderd gratis as
before; but afterwards let it be signified to him, that
if unless he renders on his part he renders another service the
benefit of the first service whatever it be shall be
taken away from him; in this case the operation
takes the tinge form of punishment. Suppose the first
service to consist in a gift an allowance to the amount of fifty
pound: 2. it may be given to him for nothing: it may
be p given to promised him upon the completion of a piece
