necessities themselves subsistence itself though it must be given may, in virtue of the arbitrary
discretion necessarily incident to parental power, be
so given, as to be made the matter of reward.

In short From these data not only the limits space extent of ground may be
space circumscribed defined within which this principle is
capable of being applied, but the a precise catalogue
may be made of the offences in offences misdeeds to the
against which it may be employd: they are neither
more nor less than the several offences against trust
which are commissible on the part of the trustee.

This leads us to the practical conclusion
that in all cases in which it can be so managed
reward ought m to be made not to precede but to follow
service: in other words that the performance of the
service in consideration expectation of which reward is given announced
ought to be render'd a condition precedent to the
delivery of it: without which the allowance that
is made, in what other ways capacities so ever it may be
useful, can not scarcely be said to operate at all in
the capacity of an inducement. This is a consideration
of which the importance
can not be too much
dwelt upon, and
which will meet us at every turn on when we come upon the
ground subject of reward.
