Reward
Cases unmeet § 3
If then the act to event to which the emolument
is thus annexed be pernicious, and in
such sort pernicious, that the contributing
intentionally to it's production taking place stands in is among the
acts which the law has made offences, the
o annexation of such emolument with the design
just mentioned
is one way
of giving offering a reward for the commission of
an offence, that is of suborning the p a man
to perpetrate it; and the pernicious effect tendency of
such a reward so applied is plain and
palpable. But whatever were the design, the
tendency of the emolument so annexed, would
as far as it operated, be just the same.
You might get ten pound by killing Peter were I to lay
you a wager of that sum that you in
particular did not kill Peter. But you
might equally get ten pound were I to
lay you a wager generally that nobody
whatever killed Peter: or more generally
still, that Peter within the time specified
would not die. The event then of your killing
Peter is an event which the wager as far
as depends upon the single strength of the motive
which it affords, t has a tendency to give
birth
