3. It matters not much whether each of them knows
that these rest are of the others being called in
If no one knows but that any other number of persons
may also have been called in it will be a
great discouragement to his forming any plan of
prevarication, since he will not know but that there he
may be ever so many others to contradict him. On
the other hand in the event of the deeds
getting into dishonest
hands
this uncertainty may [by accident]
give occasion to the adding an unlimited number of
false witnesses to contradict what shall be advanced
by the true. Moreover when dishonesty is out of
the question, a person at a long interval of time
is less likely to forget the circumstance of his having
been called in as a subscribing witness if others were present
in the same capacity than if nobody had been
present but the party or parties: every person who
is present so they the number of persons be not so
great as to form a crowd, affording an additional
memento, and if one should happen to mistake or to
forget, another may correct or refresh his memory. (a)
(a) This is the reason for
which Mahomet recommends
the getting one man and two women
for witnesses, where two
men are not to be had:
