Imposture in the way of begging: — Disgusting
exhibitions. (a)

(a) Defraudment in the way of
begging. Simple mental injuries
offerd to a neighbourhood.

5. Imposture in the
way of begging.

Instructions showing the various frauds practised
by
beggars to excite compassion: Some and pointing
out the means of detection. Some counterfeit natural,
others preternatural infirmities. Some counterfeit
the appearance of disease, being in perfect health:
other create or take advantage of a slight disease in order to exhibit
the appearance of a severe one: some pretend to
have met with cruel treatment, or some severe
and sudden loss: some borrow or steal children to
serve as implements of their trade. On the other
hand warning should be given lest by the
possibility of imposture people should be harden'd
into indifference. In a country where the police is tolerable
an object exhibiting such appearances ought
not to never to be passed by any body with unnoticed; if
honest it should e the care
of the first person that
meets with him, to consign
him into
he should be consigned to the care hands of
some publick public charity: if otherwise, to into the
hands those of justice. Instructions of this sort would com-
-prise
