In Catholic countries obedience to compliance with this as with
any other injunction which the law may
be exacted by making it a condition to the
benefits of absolution. Among Protestants it cannot this engine can never
be expected have equal force. In England where the influence
of religion in general is small, and of
whatever must come through the hands of the clergy
still smaller, it would probably have less force
than any where else. It might be worth trying
however even here: some force it might have
notwithstanding: valeat quantum valere potest. A
homily on that subject might be composed, to be read in churches
at stated periods: and occasional exhortations
might be transmitted remitted by the Ordinary to the proper
