Indirect
Raising Evidence
out perjury at the postern to let it in at the great
gate. At present where a witness in a case of this sort
comes to give his evidence, the first question he he is asked is, "pray Sir
don't you expect to receive this reward or part of
it?" All At the point of miscarriage he must answer,
"No." But if this be true it is must be because the informer has paid
him the amount of the
reward already
he has received
the reward from the informer already, to be paid back in case of miscarriage,
or because the w reward if recover'd is to
be paid over to some friend of his, or because th
he means to make the informer a present of it,
or because the informer is to do as much for him
another time, or upon some such quibble. What ever
there be the danger of perjury the only way that the law gets rid of it is
by shuffling it out of sight; as the Gascon thought
to escape his pursuers by running his head into a
bush.
