OBSTACLES PREJUDICES Profess. OF DIVIN

Another class of strenuous obstacles to improvement+ +reformation
are the prejudices of systematical Diviners —
It may be thought that the modes subjects of speculation
of the Theologian and the Jurist, are as their departments
in the state, entirely disparate and distinct:
& what connection, will may it be said, is
decision between an opinion right or wrong, about
the comparison of the God-head or about Grace,
& the making of Debts more or less expeditious in the recovery
or the putting of favor or more words into an Act
of Parliament? And it is from the want of these
connections being as abusive as it is real, than
the baneful influence of their prejudices are is overlooked.

I shall take up this
influence from its
most general & needless
source, & trace
it down to it's more particular
& immediate
manifestations

---page break---

In the first place, their end as a Prelate of the
first declares, and the Statesman's is different;
his being the promotion production of the greatest happiness
of the people, here on Earth here upon Earth: their's the
salvation of souls. Not that in the stating of these
two ends we are yet come to any point of
diversity, at least of inconsistence. God forbid
he his end of the Statesman should be inconsistent
with this latter; if it were but that it is: & from that
instant moment both you & every one are will be bound
by the first of all ties to shred every nerve to
frustrate it; & every thing that is called Law
& Politics & Government is a nuisance.

And scarcely that end which is here attributed
to him, is not; if the Deity by whom souls are saved is a benevolent being
willing the greatest happiness of his creatures,
& approving consequently of whatsoever tends to further it+:
and his willing it any where, is, as is declared by another
omniscient Divine & of the former, to be
proved no otherwise than only from his willing it here.
