Of Justifications, Excuses and Aggravations
Defence
under consideration presently: in other cases the prevention
of them being a work that will admit of
no delay must be entrusted (at the expence of so
much evil as it is worth while to allow of, and
as is necessary for the purpose) to each any persons
be they who they may, who may chance to
be in a condition to accomplish (it.) what is requisite.
Now on
Now then any act of man which threatens
to be follow'd with evil, more especially if the evil be immediate
is termed expr an attack: an attack upon
his persons, if the evils respect more immediately
his person: an attack upon his possessions,
if the evils respect more immediately his possessions.
Any acts done in the view of preventing
the evils apprehended from an act attack, are
said to be done in defence with references to of the party to
whom it is apprehended such evils are apprehended to may ensue.
Hence then arises a fourth ground of justification,
to wit Defence.
