Of Simple Exemptions from Punishment Reasons

2. Because punishments of be so severe a kind seem
in such a case to be needless. And first with regard to determent. In the early
part of life, man the mind is not capable of forming with
any tolerable accuracy any very distant prospects. & the
imagination has not yet learnt to expand itself can not long expand its attention in such manner
as to take in a distant long-continued chain of consequences
[consequences relating many of them to situations
which can not neither have fallen under the experience of the
party, nor his observation.] In this state of things,
the perpetuity of the punishment adds scarce
any thing to its effect: whatsoever is added to
the first suffering goes as it were for nothing.
Every thing The effect of the punishment depends upon the its intensity: what
is added to it in point of duration is comparatively
speaking of little use. The prospect of
a severe whipping will operate as forcibly or
nearly so as that of the loss of a limb, or even
of life itself.

2. With regard to reformation. At the time
in question, the character is as yet unformed.
The disposition is ductile, and easily susceptible
of salutary as well as pernicious impressions.
Repentance, such as a moderate chastisement
may be sufficient to produce, may not unreasonably
