1 Support, and protection, what
Impediments are either physical or moral.
Physical oppose the endeavour by without influencing
the will, for instance by opposing a physical resistance
to the exercise of the physical faculties. The removing or endeavouring to remove such impediments is stiled support. Moral
oppose the endeavour by influencing the will: which
they can only do by motives: which commonly in such a case
are commonly of the co-ercive kind. The endeavour
to remove Impediments of this kind consist in the
danger of being in some way or other and by
means of some one or other of the four sanctions + + See Introd. Ch. 3.
made to suffer.[+] and thence (as a necessary step to the being made to suffer by means of any of these in which human agency is instrumental, of being detected. The removing or endeavouring to

As to any part which a man may take
2 How far any act subsequent to the obnoxious event can be material with relation to it. As to any period subsequent to the obnoxious
event it is evident that no part act which a man
can do can itself contribute to the production of the
event in question. The expectation of it however may
contribute to the very individual event in question: and
besides this the act itself may contribute at future periods
to the production of other obnoxious events of the
like nature.
