2. That co-offenders may have an interest in restraining
one another from all excesses that are
not absolutely necessary to the accomplishment of
their unlawful purpose: each man fearing that lest he
should be made a sufferer by suffer for the criminality of his confederate.
This reason it will be observed extends to such aggravations
only as are instituted by the conduct of
the offender. See the Title of Aggravations.
As to the remaining remainder of the provisions exhibited
in this chapter, it is presumed that the
reasons in their behalf may be sufficiently apprehended informed
from those which have been already stated
given.

Reasons
1. Because in such a case, the offence instead of proving far from be
being a sign of depravity in point of disposition, is
rather to be consider'd as a contrary indication. A
strong and sence and clear perception of public interest
would indeed and dictate an opposite conduct; but
this is not to be expected in the bulk of mankind.
