Of Compensation.
Sect. I. General nature of Compensation. 1.
Compensation defined.
Compensation + + or amends, or satisfaction, or damages, or indemnification. is where man party having been a
sufferer in any way by any event is made to receive at the expence
of any one else, a benefit of any kind in consideration
of what he has suffered.

Compensation lucrative and vindictive.
Compensation in the largest sense of the word
may be distinguished according to the nature of the benefit
into lucrative and vindictive. It may be termed lucrative,
when it consists in the pleasure of receiving something that
is immediately a benefit to one's self; vindictive when
it consists in the pleasure of seeing another suffer against
whom we entertain a displeasure. Under the
head of lucrative may be included the pleasure of seeing
a benefit accrue to a person who is dear to one. Now It is
only that which is of the lucrative kind that is commonly
spoken of under the name of compensation.
Accordingly Therefore when the term compensation is here employed nothing
