Of Compensation.
it not punished: a man will therefore not be so apprehensive
of suffering by it as he would be were it not
punished. Still however it will very frequently be committed:
if therefore all compensation be denied to the person
whose goods are stolen, every man will still be
to a considerable degree apprehensive of being a sufferer
by that offence. But if the person whose goods
happen to be stolen is sure to have the loss made up
to him, it is plain he never will be under any apprehension
on the score of Theft, and the better chance a
man knows he has of having such loss made up to
him, the less will his apprehension be on this score.

Ways in which a man may sustain damage.
The species of delinquency through which damage
can happen to a man must be either such as affects his
person, such as affects his property, such as affects his reputation,
or such as affects his condition or station in life.
