1. C Of Compensation
§ect. I. General Nature of Compensation.
1. Compensation defined.
Compensation+ is where a Man having been a sufferer
+or Amends or Satisfaction, or Damage or Indemnification.
in any way by any event is made to receive at the expense of any
one else a benefit of any kind, in consideration of what he has
suffered.
2.
Compensation lucrative and vindictive.
Compensation in the largest sense of the word may be
distinguished according to the nature of the benefit into lucrative and
vindictive. It may be termed lucrative when it consists in the pleasure
of receiving something that is immediately a benefit to one's
self; vindictive when it consists in the pleasure of seeing another
suffer against whom we entertain a displeasure. Under
the head of lucrative may be included the pleasure of seeing
a benefit accrue to a person who is dear to one. It is only
that which is of the lucrative kind that is commonly spoken
of under the name of Compensation. Therefore when the term
Compensation is here employed nothing more is meant unless it
be particularly expressed, than lucrative Compensation.
