7 Immutability Place and Time
He goes on and gives examples instances: and his
instances examples encrease thicken the mist excited the darkness occasioned by
his rule. The first of these eternal laws
is, obey whatever all sorts of human laws as they happen to
be established, an instance which sums to be
a flat contradiction to the rule: obey them without
exception for he makes none, whether they
are comformable or not to the invariable and
irreversible laws of nature. The second is,
if you have received a benefit from another
being, be grateful for it: a proposition
which means next to nothing untill it be
shewn in what shape the gratitude is to
shew itself, in what cases it is to be exerted,
and what lengths it is to go. The third is,
being a created being, don't think to make yourself
independent of the being who created you: a
law which sums to be levelled against those
and those only who were concerned in building
the tower of Babel. The fourth establishes
the divine eternal measurable obligation of the rule of retaliation
in all cases, & that not on the ground
of utility, and so far as it has utility to recommend
