scarcely be perceived to have a separate existence.
A child school boy sends another to schoolboy on
an errand: what notice does he take of the inentive has he to do with the inventive
branch of his orders and the graphical? not the least notion
has he of any distinction there is between them
nor of any use there can be in making choice
of his expressions. Much the same is it with the
legislator lawgiver during the infancy of the art of
legislation. I might almost have said, even to
the present day. But in process of time a
the graphical branch comes to be improved, and
the language to which the law is consigned ceases to
be put into a method, the inventive branch
may receive improvement from analogy: and
in studying how to give the most advantageous
expression to one fact title of law, [methods means may occur]
hints may be struck out which may serve
for the improvement of the matter of another
title.

Availing ourselves of this idea We shall consider the graphical branch first
by itself and then with a view to the use application that
of it may be made of it in the improvement of the
inventive.
