Of the Principle of Utility
eminence and consequently that the pains have taken to
set the truth and importance of it in a proper light, are
far from being superfluous and unnecessary.
The learned Grotius after towards the outset
of his book after [+] bringing together quoting no small quality of Bible
[+] heaping together, according to the fashion of the age a large competent number of quotations from actual writers of all subjects sorts
texts at last bethinks himself of the line of the
heathens part Horace, in which the heathen part, adopting as
Grotius observes the doctrine of the Greek philosopher
Carneades, plainly carefully places the whole fabric of moral
science on the foundation of that this principle. "Utility"
givensays that philosopher in the figurative language given
him by his practical commentator "is the just mother
+ Itor. Sat.3.98"of Justice and Equity" + This genealogy Grotius positively
objects to: and after so doing whereupon he enters into
an investigation which is not altogether of the clearest,
but the result of which is that the ability through
not the parent of natural Law, is however in
sort related to it being first cousin to its' Great-Grandmother.
